EAA AirVenture 2011
Aviation International News

LoPresti Speed Merchants expects to receive an STC for installation of a DeltaHawk diesel engine in the Cirrus SR20 early next year. The modification will include a new LoPresti-designed cowl system, a new Hartzell propeller and fuel system adapted to jet-A and biodiesel-type fuels.

For the SR20 program, said LoPresti business manager RJ Siegel, “Our target is to outperform the SR22 on two-thirds of the fuel consumption.” The STC will include new performance parameters in the POH, he added. Critical altitude of the DeltaHawk diesel is 18,000 feet.

LoPresti Speed Merchants has been developing the new cowl system that will be used on the diesel-powered SR20 for the past five years, according to Siegel. The cowl system lowers total cooling drag by two-thirds, he said. Air flows into the cowl through a “shark mouth” underneath the propeller. The engine, cowl system, new Hartzell propeller, fuel system modifications and installation in the SR20 will cost less than $100,000.

Dennis Webb, CEO of DeltaHawk engines, re: Bill Brogdon’s interview of June 1st.

Dennis Webb writes: I appreciate my good friend Mr. Bill Brogdon’s very favorable comments about the future of diesel aviation, and we at DeltaHawk certainly concur with most of his statements. However, we do need to correct some important points. First, as DeltaHawk’s CEO, I can say with absolute authority that his statement “DeltaHawk was sold to the Chinese” is not accurate. DeltaHawk does have a deep business relationship with Hunan Sunward, an outstanding business partner and a company that will soon be proven to be one of the leaders of General Aviation in China and the world. But DeltaHawk has not been sold to any Chinese or other interests, and remains a North American owned and operated business. Second, we certainly agree with Bill Brogdon’s comments regarding the technical challenges of two-stroke engines, and that is one of the many reasons our development has taken quite a number of years. But we have overcome those technical challenges with proprietary, innovative technology, which will be rolled out to the aviation world as we commence delivery of production engines this year. We have just moved into our new 70,000 square foot headquarters, R&D, and production facility, where we are gearing up for production and continually hiring new staff as we work with the FAA to finalize certification. We are also working on airframe projects with numerous key partners, both civilian and military, that will become production products in the near term. Again, we appreciate Bill’s very positive comments about aviation diesels. We see a very exciting future.

Preparing for takeoff

Mark Hertzberg mhertzberg@journaltimes.com

Frank Laettner, left, and Andrew Findlay test an engine on a dynamometer on Thursday at DeltaHawk Diesel Engines, 2300 South St. The company makes diesel engines for airplanes. It has started making engines one at a time, so prospective customers can try them out, paving the way for future orders. Each engine undergoes this load testing.

'Synergy' Project Revealed

By Ric Reynolds, News Editor, EAA 642317

Synergy is also noteworthy because it’s the first aircraft designed around the DeltaHawk engine, a turbocharged, liquid-cooled, 200-hp diesel currently undergoing FAA certification at the company’s headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin. McGinnis says he was among the first buyers of the experimental powerplant.      Read more at:

This article fails to include a mention of co-founders and owners of DeltaHawk Engines, JP and Jeanne Brooks of Camas, Washington.  JP and Jeanne's aircraft was the reason the DeltaHawk engine was created and they have been involved with the design from the very beginning as well as being the resource and impetus for DeltaHawk's continued existence through thick and thin over the years. DeltaHawk has always been a family enterprise and the Brooks and Doers were the founding families.

Pick up this December 2006 issue.  It's the annual kit buyers' guide and worth every penny.... and you can read the article about DeltaHawk.  Tim Kern has been very fair and doesn't pull punches. You will read both the good and the bad about DeltaHawk. We tried to be very frank in the interviews.
